The ASL Starter Kits made their debut in 2004. MMP produced ASL Starter Kit 1 as a new means to start playing ASL. The Starter Kits are meant to replace Paratrooper (now out of print) as an introductory product to ASL.

There are three ASL Starter Kits. The first one introduces players to the absolute bare bones of ASL. Only infantry squads, leaders, and support weapons are present in the first starter kit. SK1 contains two geometric map boards (starter kit style), 1 countersheet, 6 scenarios, charts, dice and a rulebook. All you need to play is included in the box.

The rulebook in SK1 is quite short being only 12 pages long and much of this content are illustrations and examples. It is absolutely the cheapest way to get into ASL. Other options are to buy a different SK or go straight to full ASL, which requires Beyond Valor and the Rule book, costing close to US$200. The SK can be bought for almost ten times less than that at US$24.

The second Starter Kit introduces players to Guns, Light Anti-Tank Weapons and Mortars. This SK includes 1 countersheet, 1 half countersheet, 2 SK style map boards, dice, chart and a 20-page rulebook. The SK2 starts where the first SK left off by introducing players to a variety of different toys. It is a stand-alone product and ownership of SK1 is not required to play it. All you need to play is in the box. Beginners can simply skip SK1 if they wish to and go straight to SK2.

The third Starter Kit was released in 2007. This is generally thought to be the last SK and introduces players to tanks. It contains 3 starter-kit style map boards and 10 scenarios.
